“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!!”

Well unfortunately when it comes to guitar strings this classic rule doesn’t always work. The string doesn’t actually need to break to be broken.

From the moment a string is fitted to a guitar it is under tension. This tension constantly stretching the string. The string will have weak spots which will thin out. Once this happens the stability of the tuning has been lost.

When you then add in actually playing the guitar. All those oils and sweat juices you introduce to the strings and fingerboard. The dust and grit that sticks to the damp patches. The rust that will occur under the strings. The strings don’t really stand a chance.

If the string isn’t shinny anymore it should be changed. You can always check the colour of the string around the spindles of your machine heads to the colour of the string at the first fret.

New strings add tuning stability, tone and volume. Why go to all the effort of learning to play, if you don’t take care of the guitar?
